Ep 11: Lawrence Seals on Nourishing a More Equitable Culture Through Food Sovereignty & Community Building
Watch the episode here
Tune into another timely and visionary interview that shines a light on emerging voices in #PopCulture spaces.
In this episode, Sundiata chats with Lawrence “Nature Boy” Seals who shares his vision of how hyper local food systems can shift our modern culture, in turn, creating more equity, a deeper sense of purpose, and belonging on both a local and global level.
As an emergency responder with the US Army, Lawrence Seals observed a lack of government sanctioned infrastructure for communities in the areas he was assigned to when touring overseas. Seals witnessed firsthand devastation and destruction within the war-torn territories. However, it was the resolve to thrive by those within those communities that inspired Seals to begin his journey toward community-based agriculture for our own underserved, underdeveloped communities here at home.
Overseas, Seals quickly observed a consistency within the communities that were “self-sustaining.” He saw an unmistakable commonality among the thriving communities: an implementation of coordinated community efforts to maintain their survival, even during times of uncertainty.
These communities abroad were growing their own food, even using centuries old irrigation techniques in the unforgiving desert landscape. Seals realized that health and wellness can only be sustained through consistent access to living food, and clean water.

More about Lawrence “Nature Boy” Seals:
The ‘Seals Family Farm’ is a charming small scale urban homestead, located on 3.5 acres in Riverdale, Georgia.
“‘The Seals Family Farm’ objective has always been to establish sustainable hyper local eco/food systems throughout the areas we serve, by providing agricultural education and resources within communities at risk of food insecurity. We have been committed to our resolve to share our farming expertise throughout the communities in which we live and serve since 2018.”
The ‘Seals Family Farm’ offers workshops and resources to enrich our communities with accessible applications for sustainable lifestyles.
Through research, experimentation, application, and enthusiastically community building with other local farmers, cooperatives and farmers markets, the Seals’ have dedicated over a decade to a self-disciplined study in urban agriculture to bring this knowledge to our community.
Enriching of our neighborhoods with vital knowledge, such as gardening, local foraging, herbalism and emergency preparedness; The Seals Family Farm offer educational support to meet the vital and immediate needs of food insecurity within the community.
As longtime Clayton County residents, the Seals family understands directly of the needs of our socioeconomically diverse demographic.
This understanding has led to the development of a specialized template that is highly accessible to our diverse community.
By first addressing the barriers to sustainable lifestyles, such as affordability, lack of space, time, and other limitations, the Seals family takes away the ‘intimidation’ factor and empowers the individual with their own personalized approach to sustainable living.
The Seals’ passion and advocacy for sustainable farming was motivated by co-owner/operator Lawrence Seals’ experiences as a military veteran.
As an emergency responder with the US Army, Seals observed a lack of government sanctioned infrastructure for communities in the areas he was assigned to when touring overseas. Seals witnessed firsthand devastation and destruction within the war-torn territories.
However, it was the resolve to thrive by those within those communities that inspired Seals to begin his journey toward community-based agriculture for our own underserved, underdeveloped communities here at home.
Overseas, Seals quickly observed a consistency within the communities that were “self-sustaining”.
He saw an unmistakable commonality among the thriving communities: an implementation of coordinated community efforts to maintain their survival, even during times of uncertainty.
These communities abroad were growing their own food, even using centuries old irrigation techniques in the unforgiving desert landscape.
Seals realized that health and wellness can only be sustained through consistent access to living food, and clean water.
This overseas experience permeated; and a resolve was made at that moment: to learn how to attain a self-sustainable lifestyle for himself and his family.
Once he returned home. Lawrence and wife Ashley began studying agriculture and herbalism, with an emphasis on learning the variances in our local landscapes, local flora and fauna.
Years later, they have become locally known experts in foraging and raised bed farming, celebrated for their accessible, affordable farming techniques which uniquely address the harsh growing conditions associated with our Georgian “Red Clay” landscapes.
Through a ‘permaculture principled’ approach to urban development and farming, the Seals’ have designed a program to meet the agricultural needs designed to cater specifically to the lifestyle, demands and challenges within the greater metropolitan area and surrounding communities in Georgia.
The Seals family offer local children the opportunity to learn to care for livestock having as a centerpiece attraction for the children in the community, having amongst their homestead grazing goats, chickens, sheep and rabbits. Several times a year, farm co-founder and herbalist Ashley leads foraging workshops for all ages, to teach which wild edibles are in bloom for that season.
Together, The Seals Family implore these farming innovations to ultimately make the ‘Seals Family Farm’ approach to learning attainable and achievable to a diverse and ever-changing community.
The ‘Seals Family Farm’ takes great pride in forging this community wide effort, building together toward healthier lifestyles, and safer communities, with more opportunities for economic and ecological growth associated with urban developmental farming solutions.
